Renault Van Guide

Renault has been one of Europe's most influential commercial vehicle manufacturers for generations, developing practical working vehicles that have become a familiar sight on British roads. From compact urban delivery vans to large vehicles designed for demanding commercial work, the French manufacturer has played an important role in shaping the modern van market.

Today's range consists of the compact Kangoo, versatile Trafic and substantial Master, with petrol, diesel and electric powertrains represented across the line-up. Renault's engineering also provides the foundations for several competitors, while practical interiors, efficient engines and an increasingly ambitious electric vehicle programme help keep its vans competitive.

The latest Renault Kangoo arrived in Britain in 2022, introducing a more modern design, improved refinement and considerably better technology than its predecessor. Developed alongside the Mercedes-Benz Citan and Nissan Townstar, the Kangoo comes in two body lengths, with upto 4.2 cubic metres of cargo capacity, with the longer version offering a particularly useful 2230mm load floor.

Sliding side doors, wide rear openings and a relatively square cargo compartment make the Kangoo well suited to tradespeople and urban delivery work. The Kangoo offers petrol, diesel and electric powertrains. The petrol option is a 1.3-litre TCe engine producing 130bhp, while the economical 1.5-litre Blue dCi diesel is available with 95 or 115bhp. A seven-speed automatic transmission is offered with the more powerful diesel, providing additional flexibility for drivers covering longer distances.

The fully electric Kangoo E-Tech uses a 45kWh battery and a 120bhp electric motor, offering up to 190 miles of WLTP combined range. Charging at up to 80kW DC allows a substantial amount of energy to be recovered during a short stop, while the electric version retains the same basic cargo compartment as its combustion-engined counterparts.

Payload capacity is another strong point, with selected diesel versions capable of carrying up to 975kg. Electric models offer slightly less carrying capacity, although the longer version can still accommodate a useful commercial load. With competitive pricing, three different propulsion options and well-developed engineering, the Kangoo remains one of the most versatile compact vans available.

The Renault Trafic has been an important fixture of the European commercial vehicle market since 1980, with the current third generation arriving in 2014. A substantial facelift in 2021 introduced revised styling, improved technology and a more comfortable interior, helping the Trafic remain competitive.

Two current UK panel-van lengths provide 5.8 or 6.7 cubic metres of cargo space, while the load-through bulkhead allows long materials to extend beneath the passenger seat. In the longer version, maximum load length reaches an impressive 4150mm. Power comes from a 2.0-litre diesel engine, with outputs of 130 to 170bhp. Manual and automatic transmissions are available, with the more powerful versions providing useful flexibility for heavier loads and motorway driving.

Selected models can tow up to 2500kg, another significant advantage for businesses regularly using trailers. The Trafic has also been available with electric propulsion. Introduced in 2023, the earlier Trafic E-Tech Electric offered up to 186 miles of WLTP range. However, Renault is now preparing an entirely new electric Trafic, developed around a dedicated 800V electric platform rather than the existing diesel van's architecture.

The forthcoming Trafic E-Tech Electric introduces particularly ambitious technology, including rapid charging, a projected range of up to 279 miles and a much more futuristic design. Renault is targeting approximately 20 minutes for a 15–80% rapid charge under suitable conditions. These figures remain subject to final homologation, and the new model is not yet listed with a UK retail starting price.

Beyond the conventional panel van, Renault offers Crew Van and passenger derivatives, giving the Trafic considerable flexibility for businesses requiring additional seating. Its practical load area, substantial towing capacity and proven diesel engines make the existing model a strong commercial choice, while the forthcoming electric replacement promises one of the biggest changes in the Trafic's history.

The latest Renault Master arrived in 2024, replacing a generation that had been built for over than a decade. Developed alongside the Nissan Interstar, the new Master comes in three panel-van body configurations in the current UK range, providing cargo capacities of 10.8, 13.0 or 14.8 cubic metres. The longest version offers a 3855mm load floor, while the tallest H3 roof provides more than 2.1 metres of internal height. A generous 1380mm between the wheel arches makes the Master well suited to carrying pallets, bulky equipment and substantial commercial loads.

One of the most distinctive aspects of the new Master is its aerodynamic design. Renault has worked extensively to reduce drag, giving the vehicle a more sculpted front end, carefully managed airflow and a subtly tapered body. These improvements benefit both diesel efficiency and electric driving range, demonstrating how even a large, relatively square commercial vehicle can benefit from more sophisticated aerodynamic development.

Diesel versions use a new 2.0-litre Blue dCi engine, producing 130, 150 or 170bhp depending on specification. A six-speed manual transmission is available, alongside a nine-speed automatic gearbox on selected versions. Front-wheel drive provides a relatively low load floor and efficient packaging, while maximum payload exceeds 1.5 tonnes on some configurations.

The fully electric versions 87kWh battery provides up to 285 miles of WLTP combined range while the electric motor produces 143bhp. Importantly, the electric version retains the same basic cargo compartment as the diesel Master, allowing businesses to move towards electric propulsion without sacrificing the vehicle's fundamental practicality. Selected electric versions can carry around 1.5 tonnes and tow up to 2500kg, although these figures depend on gross vehicle weight and specification.

Heavier diesel and electric versions can exceed 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight, so businesses should check their driving licence entitlements and any applicable operating requirements. For those requiring a conventional large panel van, however, the latest Master offers an appealing combination of generous cargo space, efficient engines, modern technology and a particularly competitive electric range.
