Volvo Guide

Volvo has built its reputation around safety, comfort and understated Swedish design, with a long history of producing practical family cars. Since becoming part of China’s Geely group in 2010, the brand has gained access to greater investment and shared technology while retaining a distinct identity.

Today, Volvo is increasingly focused on electrification, with EVs sitting alongside MHEV and PHEV models across much of the range. SUVs now dominate its line-up, although the V60 keeps its traditional estate-car heritage alive. Strong safety credentials, minimalist interiors and improving electric technology remain central to Volvo’s appeal.

The EX30 packages Volvo’s latest electric technology into its smallest and most affordable SUV. Strong performance, good range and a minimalist interior give it plenty of appeal, while its compact dimensions make it particularly well suited to urban use. Rear space and boot capacity are relatively modest, but increasingly attractive used prices strengthen the case for Volvo’s smallest EV.

The XC40 remains a practical and appealing small SUV despite being one of Volvo’s older models, with an upright design that provides good passenger and luggage space. Buyers can choose between MHEV power in the XC40 or fully electric running in the EX40, while regular updates and increasingly attractive deals help keep both versions competitive against newer rivals.

Volvo EC40 (21-)
Volvo EC40

Key rivals : BMW iX2, Nissan Leaf, Peugeot E-3008, Smart #3, Toyota C-HR+

The EC40 provides a more style-focused alternative to the EX40, trading some of its sibling’s boxy SUV character for a sleeker coupé-inspired roofline. It retains much of the EX40’s everyday practicality and electric performance while offering a more distinctive appearance. Heavy early depreciation also means used examples can now represent particularly strong value.

Volvo V60 (18-)
Volvo V60

RRP From : £45,210

The V60 is now a rare sight in a market increasingly dominated by SUVs, offering traditional estate-car practicality with a comfortable, understated interior. Its age is beginning to show in places, but strong refinement and a choice of MHEV and PHEV powertrains keep it relevant. Used prices also make the V60 an appealing alternative to newer family cars.

Volvo ES90 (25-)

Boot : 424L

Key rivals : BMW i5, DS No8, Lexus ES, Mazda 6e, Mercedes-Benz EQE

The ES90 combines the comfort and lower driving position of a traditional large saloon with the practicality of a hatchback-style rear opening. A technology-focused interior, long electric range and generous passenger space make it an interesting alternative to premium electric SUVs, although its relatively small boot is disappointing for such a large car.

Volvo XC60 (17-)

Boot : 483L

Key rivals : Audi Q5, BMW X3, Lexus NX, Mazda CX-60, Mercedes-Benz GLC

The XC60 is one of the older models in Volvo’s range, but several updates have kept its technology and styling surprisingly fresh. A comfortable interior, useful family space and a choice of MHEV and PHEV powertrains maintain its broad appeal. Newer rivals offer more modern foundations, but attractive discounts help the XC60 remain a compelling family SUV.

Volvo EX60 (26-)
Volvo EX60

The EX60 brings Volvo’s electric SUV range into a new generation, combining a spacious family-friendly body with the company’s latest battery, charging and cabin technology. Strong range and rapid charging make it considerably more suited to long journeys than earlier electric Volvos, while its positioning alongside the XC60 gives buyers a modern electric alternative without moving to a much larger SUV.

Volvo XC90 (15-)
Volvo XC90

RRP From : £66,270

Used Price From : c. £12,000

Boot : 650L, 298L (7-seat)

Key rivals : Audi Q7, BMW X5, Chery Tiggo 9, Lexus RX, Mercedes-Benz GLE

The XC90 may trace its roots back more than a decade, but repeated updates have kept Volvo’s largest combustion-powered SUV relevant. Seven-seat practicality, an elegant interior and MHEV and PHEV powertrains make it a strong family choice, while substantial discounts can make it considerably more attractive than its list price suggests. Its age is evident underneath, but the basic formula has aged remarkably well.

Volvo EX90 (24-)
Volvo EX90

RRP From : £73,160
Pre Reg From : c. £71,500
Used Price From : c. £58,000

The EX90 is Volvo’s electric flagship, combining three-row practicality with a technology-heavy interior and the brand’s latest safety systems. A newly expanded range has made the entry price considerably more accessible than when the EX90 first arrived, while its large cabin and strong electric range make it a convincing alternative to both premium electric SUVs and the long-running XC90.
