Volkswagen Van Guide

Volkswagen has been one of Europe's most influential commercial vehicle manufacturers for decades, building everything from the original rear-engined Transporter to today's increasingly sophisticated diesel, hybrid and electric vans.

Today's range stretches from the compact Caddy Cargo and distinctive electric ID. Buzz Cargo to the versatile Transporter and substantial Crafter. A choice of petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid and electric powertrains provides considerable flexibility, while Volkswagen's emphasis on comfort, practicality and technology has helped establish its commercial vehicles as favourites with businesses and private buyers alike.

The fifth-generation Volkswagen Caddy Cargo arrived in 2020, introducing the MQB platform, bringing improvements in refinement, comfort and technology. The Caddy also provides the foundations for the latest Ford Transit Connect, introduced in 2024, with both vans sharing much of their engineering and being manufactured at Volkswagen's Poznań factory in Pola

Available in standard and longer Maxi configurations, the Caddy Cargo offers 3.1 or 3.7 cubic metres of cargo space. Although these figures are slightly smaller than those offered by some Stellantis competitors, the Volkswagen makes good use of its available dimensions, with a useful square load compartment and sliding side doors.

The engine range includes 2.0-litre diesel units, while 1.5-litre TSI petrol versions also feature in the range. There's also the eHybrid, which combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor and rechargeable battery. Producing a combined 150PS, it offers up to 72 miles of WLTP electric range, potentially allowing local delivery rounds to be completed without using petrol.

The Caddy's interior is another strength, offering passenger-car levels of comfort, modern infotainment and a wide range of driver assistance equipment. With a maximum payload approaching 700kg, it remains a practical choice for tradespeople and delivery operators, while the longer Maxi version adds useful carrying capacity without becoming difficult to manoeuvre.

The ID. Buzz Cargo is the most distinctive Volkswagen commercial vehicles currently on sale, combining modern EV styling and proportions with a purpose-built electric platform. Despite its relatively compact 4.7-metre length, the ID. Buzz Cargo provides 3.9 cubic metres of load space, exceeding the Caddy Cargo.

Its wide, square load compartment and relatively low load floor make it particularly useful for urban deliveries, while the sliding side door and choice of rear openings improve everyday practicality. Unlike conventional front-wheel-drive compact vans, the ID. Buzz Cargo uses a rear-mounted electric motor and rear-wheel drive, with more powerful 4MOTION all-wheel-drive versions also available.

The latest range includes 58kWh and 79kWh battery options, with power outputs reaching 340PS in the twin-motor version. Selected models provide up to 277 miles of WLTP combined range. Rapid DC charging at up to 185kW allows suitable versions to recharge from 10 to 80% in approximately 30 minutes.

Its quiet driving experience, tight turning circle and comfortable cabin further strengthen its suitability for urban and suburban use. The ID. Buzz Cargo is not without compromises. Payload capacity is relatively modest compared with some conventional diesel vans, and its distinctive appearance does not necessarily translate into the greatest possible cargo volume for its exterior width.

Modern design and strong driving refinement make it an appealing choice for businesses wishing to combine practical transport with a recognisable identity. Few modern vans have such an instantly recognisable appearance, and the model offers a genuinely different alternative to conventional box-shaped commercial vehicles.

Now in its seventh generation, the newest Transporter shares its underlying platform with the Ford Transit Custom, following a major collaboration between Volkswagen and Ford. The two vehicles are closely related mechanically, although Volkswagen has developed its own exterior styling, interior details and equipment packages.

The standard panel van is offered in two body lengths, providing 5.8 or 6.8 cubic metres of load space. The longer version offers a three-metre load floor, extending to 3450mm with the load-through bulkhead. A high-roof derivative with approximately nine cubic metres of capacity has also been announced.

Diesel versions use a 2.0-litre TDI engine producing 110 or 150PS, with manual and automatic transmissions available depending on specification. Selected models also offer 4MOTION all-wheel drive, providing additional traction in difficult conditions. For buyers covering long distances or towing regularly, the diesel Transporter remains a practical option.

The plug-in hybrid Transporter combines a 2.5-litre petrol engine with electric propulsion, producing a combined 232PS. Meanwhile, the fully electric e-Transporter uses a 70kWh battery, with power outputs ranging from 136 to 286PS. Volkswagen quotes up to 225 miles of WLTP combined range for selected electric versions.

Volkswagen also offers Kombi, Shuttle and sportier derivatives, continuing the Transporter's long-standing appeal beyond conventional business use. Although the move to Ford-derived engineering represents a significant departure from previous generations, the latest Transporter remains an exceptionally versatile medium-sized van with a broader range of propulsion options than ever before.

The Volkswagen Crafter is the largest conventional van in the manufacturer's range, offering substantial carrying capacity, and a broad choice of configurations. The current generation arrived in 2017, replacing the original Crafter that had been developed alongside the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter.

The second-generation Crafter was developed independently by Volkswagen, with the same underlying vehicle also sold as the MAN TGE. A major update in 2024 introduced a revised dashboard, larger infotainment screens, additional driver assistance systems and improved interior technology, helping the Crafter remain competitive with newer rivals.

One of the Crafter's greatest strengths is the sheer variety of available configurations. Three body lengths and several roof heights provide cargo capacities from approximately 9.3 to 18.4 cubic metres, depending on drivetrain and specification. The Crafter offers front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive and 4MOTION all-wheel drive. Front-wheel-drive models provide a relatively low load floor and generous cargo volume, while rear-wheel-drive versions are particularly suitable for heavier commercial work. The all-wheel-drive versions offer additional traction for businesses operating on difficult surfaces or in challenging weather conditions.

Power comes from a 2.0-litre TDI diesel engine, with outputs of approximately 138, 161 or 175bhp depending on configuration. Manual and automatic transmissions are available, while heavier versions can reach a gross vehicle weight of five tonnes. Payload capacity can exceed 2.5 tonnes on selected models, although these versions may require additional driving licence entitlements and operating arrangements.

Although it is more expensive than some rivals, the Crafter combines exceptional carrying capacity with a broad choice of drivetrains, modern technology and a well-developed interior. Its substantial dimensions and numerous specialist configurations make it one of the most versatile large commercial vehicles available in the UK.
