Dacia Van Guide

Dacia has developed a reputation for offering straightforward, affordable vehicles, prioritising practicality and value over unnecessary complexity. Its approach to commercial vehicles is rather different from that of traditional van manufacturers, concentrating on compact, car-derived models rather than conventional panel vans.

Today's UK commercial range consists of the tiny electric Spring Cargo and the more substantial Duster Cargo. Both replace their rear seats with dedicated load compartments, offering businesses affordable alternatives to larger vans. With electric and hybrid powertrains, compact dimensions and surprisingly useful carrying capacity, Dacia occupies an interesting niche in the British commercial vehicle market.

The Dacia Spring Cargo arrived in Britain in 2025 as one of the smallest and most affordable electric commercial vehicles available. Based on the Spring city car, it replaces the rear seats with a flat load compartment, protective floor covering and a bulkhead behind the two front occupants. Its remarkably compact dimensions make it particularly interesting for businesses operating in congested urban areas.

Measuring just 3701mm in length, the Spring Cargo is considerably smaller than conventional compact vans, yet offers 1085 litres of load space. The cargo compartment provides approximately 1170mm of load length, with access through the original tailgate and rear passenger doors. Its modest payload limits the weight of goods that can be carried, but the space is useful for parcels, light tools and small delivery loads.

For 2026, the Spring received a revised electric powertrain, with the Cargo now using a 24.3kWh battery and 70bhp electric motor. Official WLTP combined range reaches 140 miles, making it particularly suited to short, predictable journeys rather than regular motorway travel. DC charging allows the battery to recharge from 20 to 80% in approximately 29 minutes under suitable conditions.

Perhaps the Spring Cargo's biggest attraction is its exceptionally low purchase price. Dacia's October 2026 list price of £10,995 excluding VAT falls to an effective £8,495 after the £2500 UK Government Plug-in Van Grant, before VAT and registration costs. That makes it considerably cheaper than most conventional electric vans, and competitive even with some used petrol or diesel commercial vehicles.

The Spring Cargo is not a replacement for a conventional panel van, with limited load volume, a modest payload and relatively short electric range. However, its tiny dimensions, low running costs and accessible price make it particularly appealing for florists, local delivery operators and small businesses that simply do not require a larger vehicle.

Dacia Duster Cargo (25-)

RRP From: £22,495 + VAT
Pre Reg From: c. £22,000 + VAT
Used Price From: c. £20,000

Powertrains: Petrol MHEV
Dimensions: 4343 × 1813 × 1616 mm
Cargo Space: 1149 litres

Load Floor Length: 1345 mm

Maximum Payload: 430kg

Key rivals: KGM Rexton Commercial, Land Rover Defender Hard Top, Toyota Corolla Commercial, Toyota Land Cruiser Commercial

The Duster Cargo brings Dacia's rugged SUV character into the light commercial vehicle market, replacing the rear seats of the third-generation Duster with a practical load compartment. Introduced in 2025, it follows earlier Duster Commercial models and provides an unusual alternative to conventional small vans, combining car-like comfort with useful ground clearance and a more substantial driving position.

The conversion is officially approved as an N1 commercial vehicle and includes a hard-wearing wooden load floor, protective lining, four lashing points and a mesh bulkhead separating the occupants from the cargo area. Total advertised cargo capacity reaches 1149 litres, including an underfloor compartment, while maximum payload is 430kg.

Initially available with two different powertrains, the Duster Cargo offered a 130bhp mild-hybrid petrol engine with four-wheel drive and a more economical 155bhp full hybrid with front-wheel drive. The latest UK price list concentrates on the latter, combining a 1.8-litre petrol engine with electric assistance and an automatic transmission. The hybrid system can operate electrically at low speeds and offers official combined economy of around 60mpg.

One of the Duster Cargo's biggest advantages is its ability to travel beyond ordinary urban environments. With 209mm of ground clearance in front-wheel-drive form, substantial wheel-arch protection and relatively short overhangs, it is better suited to rough tracks and rural working environments than many conventional car-derived vans.

The Duster Cargo starts at £22,495 excluding VAT, making it significantly more affordable compared with specialist commercial SUVs such as the Land Rover Defender Hard Top or Toyota Land Cruiser Commercial. Its compact cargo compartment and modest payload mean it cannot compete with a conventional van for carrying capacity, but for agricultural businesses, rural tradespeople and operators carrying smaller loads, the combination of hybrid efficiency, useful ground clearance and SUV comfort provides a distinctive proposition.
