Subaru Guide

Subaru is a Japanese manufacturer best known for all-wheel drive, horizontally opposed petrol engines and a long association with rallying. Its UK following has traditionally included rural households and buyers who prioritise traction, visibility and practical usability over fashion. The current range combines e-BOXER mild-hybrid crossovers with the electric Solterra, developed through Subaru’s partnership with Toyota.

It remains a relatively small brand in Britain, sold through specialist retailers rather than a huge national network. The cars tend to emphasise everyday capability and safety equipment. Further electric models are announced, so buyers should distinguish the existing showroom range from the vehicles still to arrive.

Current Models

RRP From: £35,995

Used Price From: c. £24,000

The Crosstrek is a compact crossover with a more outdoorsy brief than most. Standard all-wheel drive and useful ground clearance make it appealing for rural roads, muddy car parks and active weekends. It is less concerned with looking luxurious or delivering startling acceleration. Buyers who value sure-footedness and a manageable footprint may find that a worthwhile trade-off.

Forester (25-)

RRP From: £39,995
Pre Reg From: c. £34,000
Used Price From: c. £28,000

Key rivals: Honda CR-V, Kia Sportage, Mazda CX-5, Nissan X-Trail, Toyota RAV4

The Forester remains an SUV for people who expect to use its capability, not simply admire its stance. The upright cabin, good visibility and standard all-wheel drive suit country living and family adventures. This generation adds a more modern interior without abandoning the practical formula. It is best approached as a dependable all-rounder rather than a sporting or glamorous choice.

Solterra (22-)
Solterra — current UK generation

RRP From: £52,505
Pre Reg From: N/A
Used Price From: c. £17,000

The Solterra translates Subaru’s all-weather approach into an electric family SUV. Its Toyota connections are clear, but standard all-wheel drive and a practical cabin keep it aligned with the brand’s usual buyers. Used examples can offer a very different value proposition from the new-car list price. Compare the particular model year carefully, especially as the updated version approaches.

Specifications, dimensions and prices were correct at the time of the latest update. Recommended retail prices are official UK list prices, while pre-registered and used values are approximate UK market figures and may vary depending on specification, mileage, condition and location. Recommended retail prices include any applicable UK Government electric vehicle grant where available but exclude dealer discounts, manufacturer incentives and other retail offers.
