Mercedes-Benz Van Guide

Mercedes-Benz has built a reputation for producing some of Europe's most capable and recognisable commercial vehicles, combining practical engineering with comfort, technology and a strong emphasis on durability.

From the compact Citan to the versatile Vito and imposing Sprinter, the Mercedes-Benz van range caters for small businesses, delivery operators, specialist conversions and large commercial fleets. Diesel and electric powertrains provide a choice for different working environments, while the availability of rear-wheel drive, automatic transmissions and advanced driver assistance systems helps distinguish the range from more affordable competitors.

The second-generation Citan arrived in the UK in 2022, bringing a substantial improvement in comfort, practicality and technology over its predecessor. Developed alongside the Renault Kangoo and Nissan Townstar, the latest Citan shares much of its engineering with those models, although Mercedes-Benz has given it its own exterior styling, interior equipment and driving character.

Two body lengths provide between 2.9 and 3.62 cubic metres of cargo capacity, with the longer version offering a particularly useful 2170mm load floor. Sliding side doors and wide-opening rear doors make it well suited to tradespeople and local delivery work, while its compact dimensions remain convenient in towns and cities.

The current diesel range includes the Citan 110 CDI and more powerful 112 CDI, the latter offering approximately 114bhp and an automatic gearbox. The fully electric eCitan uses a 45kWh battery and a 122PS electric motor, providing a WLTP combined range of up to 176 miles. Fast charging and zero tailpipe emissions make the electric version particularly attractive for businesses operating predictable local routes.

Although the Citan carries a premium over some closely related competitors, its comfortable cabin, modern safety equipment and Mercedes-Benz dealer support help justify its position. A versatile Crew Van derivative is also available, offering additional passenger accommodation without moving into a larger commercial vehicle.

The Mercedes-Benz Vito has been a familiar presence in the medium-sized van market since the 1990s, offering a more refined and upmarket alternative to conventional commercial vehicles. The current generation arrived in 2014 and has received several substantial updates, including revised styling, improved technology and a more sophisticated interior for 2024.

Unlike most of its front-wheel-drive competitors, the diesel Vito uses a rear-wheel-drive layout. Two body lengths provide 6.0 or 6.6 cubic metres of cargo space, while a low overall height of approximately 1.9 metres allows access to many height-restricted car parks. The diesel range uses Mercedes-Benz's 2.0-litre engine with outputs of 134 to 187bhp. Manual and nine-speed automatic transmissions are available, while selected configurations offer additional traction and towing capability.

The fully electric eVito takes a different approach, using front-wheel drive and a 60kWh usable battery. Mercedes-Benz quotes a WLTP range of up to approximately 193 miles for selected versions, making it most suitable for regional deliveries and businesses with reliable charging facilities. Its battery installation preserves much of the conventional van's useful cargo area.

Although some rivals offer more cargo space for less money, the Vito remains a compelling choice for operators who place particular importance on comfort, road manners, technology and the availability of rear-wheel drive.

Few commercial vehicles have developed a reputation quite like the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. First introduced in 1995, it quickly established itself as one of Europe's most capable large vans, becoming a familiar choice for delivery companies, tradespeople, emergency services and specialist converters.

The current generation arrived in 2018 and has received several updates since, including revised engines, additional safety technology and Mercedes-Benz's MBUX infotainment system. Its comfortable cabin and substantial road presence help distinguish it from more utilitarian rivals.

The Sprinter's greatest attraction is its versatility. Multiple body lengths, roof heights and weight ratings provide a wide range of carrying capacities, with the largest current UK panel van offering up to 15.5 cubic metres of cargo space. The longest version can accommodate loads measuring up to 4810mm.

Unlike front-wheel-drive rivals such as the Fiat Ducato, Citroën Relay and Peugeot Boxer, the diesel Sprinter uses rear-wheel drive, with four-wheel drive available on selected versions. This can benefit towing, traction and heavier-duty applications, although it reduces the space between the wheel arches and manoeuvrability.

Diesel models use Mercedes-Benz's 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with outputs reaching 187bhp, while selected versions can tow up to 3500kg. The fully electric eSprinter is available with 81kWh or 113kWh batteries and offers up to 272 miles of WLTP range. More than thirty years after its introduction, it remains one of the most versatile and widely respected vehicles in the large-van segment.
