De Tomaso Guide

Founded in Modena in 1959 by Argentine racing driver Alejandro de Tomaso, De Tomaso became one of Italy's most distinctive performance car manufacturers. The company built its reputation on combining Italian design with powerful American engines, most famously in the mid-engined Pantera. After decades of changing fortunes, the marque was revived under new ownership in 2014, with an ambition to recapture the character of its celebrated sports cars.

Its modern revival centres on the P72, a hand-built V8 supercar inspired by the 1960s P70 racing project, combining sculpted bodywork with unusually traditional engineering. Alongside it, De Tomaso is developing the even more extreme P900, an 18-car, track-only programme powered by a naturally aspirated V12. Production of the road-going P72 is limited to 72 examples, all of which have been allocated, making new UK availability exceptionally restricted.

The P72 is a deliberately traditional supercar, combining an exceptionally elegant carbon-fibre body with a mid-mounted 5.0-litre supercharged V8 producing approximately 700bhp. Power reaches the rear wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox, while pushrod suspension and a specially developed carbon-fibre monocoque prioritise driver involvement. Inside, traditional analogue instruments, beautifully machined metal controls and an exposed gear linkage replace the large screens increasingly common in modern hypercars. Rather than chasing record-breaking top speeds, the P72 concentrates on mechanical feedback, distinctive styling and the experience of driving.

Specifications, dimensions and prices were correct at the time of the latest update. Recommended retail prices are official UK list prices, while pre-registered and used values are approximate UK market figures and may vary depending on specification, mileage, condition and location. Recommended retail prices include any applicable UK Government electric vehicle grant where available but exclude dealer discounts, manufacturer incentives and other retail offers.

Dimensions quote vehicle width excluding exterior mirrors unless otherwise stated. Boot capacities are measured or quoted up to the parcel shelf/load cover where applicable, rather than to the roof. For seven-seat vehicles, the listed boot capacity refers to space behind the third row with all seats in use unless otherwise stated.

Power outputs are quoted in bhp, with manufacturers' kW, PS or CV figures converted where necessary. Electric driving ranges use WLTP combined figures where available.

Unless otherwise stated, vehicle images are manufacturer press photographs provided by De Tomaso and remain the copyright of their respective owners.
