Caterham Guide
Caterham is a British specialist best known for the Seven, whose roots lie in Colin Chapman’s lightweight Lotus of 1957. Caterham took over production rights in 1973 and has steadily developed the formula while preserving its small size, exposed wheels and direct driving feel.
These are primarily weekend and track-day cars, with little of the isolation or convenience expected in a modern everyday vehicle. UK buyers can choose factory assembly or, on selected models, build a kit themselves. This guide groups closely related versions and quotes factory-built starting prices. Chassis size, weather equipment and intended road or circuit use deserve particular attention.
Prices shown include factory assembly. Lower starting prices may be available where Caterham offers the same model as a self-build kit.
Current Models
Seven 170 & 600 (21-)![]() Photo: Caterham Cars | RRP From: £32,085 |
The lightest Seven makes modest power feel entertaining because there is so little car to move. Its narrow body and 660cc turbocharged Suzuki engine suit twisting lanes and drivers who enjoy working with the car rather than relying on outright speed. Cabin fit is snug, so try it before ordering. For many weekend owners, this is all the performance they need.
Seven 310 Encore (26-)![]() | RRP From: £42,590 |
The Seven 310 Encore gives Caterham’s 1.6-litre Ford Sigma engine one final outing, using the last 25 units held at the factory. Producing 152bhp in a car weighing around 540kg, it sits neatly between the entry-level Suzuki-powered Sevens and the 180bhp Duratec models. Each example is individually numbered and offered in one of six special colour schemes, with both standard and larger chassis available.
Super 7 2000 (22-)![]() | RRP From: £43,585 |
The Super Seven 2000 gives Caterham’s traditional Seven formula a more nostalgic look, with swept front wings, chrome detailing and a classically trimmed interior. Its naturally aspirated 2.0-litre Ford Duratec engine produces 180bhp through a five-speed manual gearbox, taking it from 0-60mph in 4.8 seconds. At around 560kg, it remains extremely light, direct and involving, but with a slightly more relaxed, road-focused character than Caterham’s harder-edged models.
Seven 360 / 420 (15-)![]() | RRP From: £41,085 |
These Ford-powered Sevens occupy the middle of the range and suit buyers who want strong performance without the supercharged flagship’s intensity. The 360 is an appealing road choice, while the 420 brings extra urgency for circuit use. Equipment packs and chassis sizes change the experience considerably. Spend time choosing the seating, suspension and weather protection rather than focusing only on power.
Seven 420 Cup (22-)![]() | RRP From: £56,490 |
The Cup is the road-legal Seven for owners whose calendar revolves around track days. Its sequential gearbox and adjustable dampers give it a more focused personality than a regular 420, without requiring a full racing programme. It is an involving tool for learning a circuit, but its noise and exposure make the journey there part of the commitment too.
Seven 620 (13-)![]() | RRP From: £58,490 |
The supercharged 620 takes the Seven’s lightweight formula to an extreme. Acceleration is intense, yet the driver remains closely involved through the steering, brakes and exposed cockpit. It makes most sense for an experienced enthusiast seeking a memorable weekend or circuit car. The S offers a conventional manual gearbox; the R adds another layer of track-focused urgency and mechanical theatre.
Seven CSR (24-)![]() | RRP From: £79,995 |
CSR gives the Seven a more sophisticated suspension layout and a particularly carefully finished cabin. It remains an exposed, lightweight sports car, but aims to combine the familiar immediacy with a more composed feel on imperfect roads. Its limited production and higher price make it an enthusiast’s choice. Try it alongside a regular 420 before deciding what the extra refinement is worth.
