BYD Guide

BYD has rapidly become one of the UK's fastest-growing car brands, building its reputation on competitive pricing, advanced battery technology and an unusually fast-moving model range. What began here as a predominantly electric line-up now stretches across compact EVs, plug-in-hybrid hatchbacks, family SUVs, estates and performance-focused electric models.

The Dolphin Surf remains the affordable entry point, while the new Dolphin G DM-i brings plug-in-hybrid power into the supermini class. Further up the range, BYD's Blade Battery technology and increasingly capable Super DM hybrids underpin everything from the ATTO models to the Seal and Sealion families, giving the brand one of the broadest electrified ranges available from a relatively new UK manufacturer.

The Dolphin Surf is BYD's smallest and cheapest UK model, combining genuinely compact dimensions with a surprisingly roomy cabin and useful boot. Different battery sizes allow buyers to choose between a lower entry price and up to 200 miles of WLTP range, making it particularly well suited to urban and shorter-distance use.

BYD Dolphin G DM-i (26-)

RRP From: £23,990

Boot: 425L

Key rivals: Aion UT, MG3 Hybrid+, Renault Clio E-Tech, Toyota Yaris Hybrid, Vauxhall Corsa Hybrid

The Dolphin G DM-i is a very different car from the existing electric Dolphin, sitting firmly in the supermini class and using BYD's plug-in-hybrid technology instead. Despite its compact footprint, it offers an unusually large 425-litre boot and up to 65 miles of electric range in higher-spec versions, giving buyers an interesting alternative to conventional small hybrids.

BYD Dolphin (23-)
BYD Dolphin

RRP From: £30,230
Pre Reg From: c. £17,000
Used Price From: c. £15,000

Powertrains: EV
Dimensions: 4290 × 1770 × 1570 mm
Boot: 345L

Key rivals: MG4, Renault Mégane E-Tech, Leapmotor B05, Volkswagen ID.3, Volvo EX30

The Dolphin is the larger of BYD's two similarly named hatchbacks and remains fully electric. Its tall body gives passengers plenty of space for the footprint, while the latest versions offer up to 265 miles of WLTP range. Heavy discounting and depreciation also mean the used market can look dramatically cheaper than the current list price.

BYD Atto 2 (25-)
BYD Atto 2

RRP From: £26,995
Pre Reg From: c. £22,000
Used Price From: c. £18,500

Powertrains: PHEV • EV
Dimensions: 4310–4330 × 1830 × 1675 mm
Boot: 400L (EV) • 425L (PHEV)

Key rivals: Citroën C3 Aircross, Kia EV3, Renault 4, Smart #1, Volvo EX30

The Atto 2 now offers buyers two quite different routes into BYD's compact SUV range. The fully electric version provides up to 267 miles of WLTP range, while the cheaper DM-i adds petrol backup and substantially greater long-distance flexibility. Both retain a compact footprint and useful family-car practicality.

BYD Atto 3 EVO (26-)
BYD Atto 3 EVO

RRP From: £38,990
Pre Reg From: c. £33,500
Used Price From: c. £28,000

Dimensions: 4455 × 1875 × 1615 mm
Boot: 490L

Key rivals: Kia EV5, Leapmotor b10, Renault Scenic E-Tech, Skoda Elroq, Volvo EX40

The Atto 3 EVO is much more than a minor facelift of BYD's original UK SUV. A newer platform brings a larger boot, much faster charging and up to 316 miles of WLTP range, while rear-wheel drive becomes standard and an all-wheel-drive version adds serious performance. It is a considerably more capable car than the model it replaces.

BYD Seal (23-)
BYD Seal

RRP From: £45,730
Pre Reg From: c. £32,000
Used Price From: c. £26,000

Powertrains: EV
Dimensions: 4800 × 1875 × 1460 mm
Boot: 400L

Key rivals: BMW i4, Hyundai Ioniq 6, Polestar 2, Tesla Model 3, Volkswagen ID.7

The Seal remains BYD's sleek electric saloon, combining a low driving position and rear-wheel-drive layout with up to 354 miles of WLTP range. The dual-motor version adds very strong acceleration, but the more efficient rear-drive model is arguably the better fit for everyday use. Nearly-new prices can be considerably lower than list.

BYD Seal 6 DM-i (25-)
BYD Seal 6 DM-i

RRP From: £34,020
Pre Reg From: c. £26,000
Used Price From: c. £22,000

Boot: 425L • 500L (Touring)

Key rivals: MG HS PHEV, Leapmotor C10 REEV, Skoda Octavia / Superb PHEV

The Seal 6 DM-i brings BYD's plug-in-hybrid technology into a more traditional family-car shape, with both saloon and Touring estate versions available. Long electric range and very high total touring range make it particularly suited to drivers covering mixed journeys, while the estate adds the practicality increasingly missing from the wider market.

BYD Sealion 5 DM-i (26-)
BYD Sealion 5 DM-i

RRP From: £29,995
Pre Reg From: c. £24,000
Used Price From: c. £22,000

Powertrains: PHEV
Dimensions: 4738 × 1860 × 1710 mm
Boot: 463L

Key rivals: Honda CR-V, Jaecoo 8, Kia Sorento PHEV, Peugeot 5008 PHEV

The Sealion 5 is one of BYD's strongest value propositions, offering a full-size family-SUV body and plug-in-hybrid power for roughly the price of many smaller petrol crossovers. Up to 53 miles of electric range and a 463-litre boot make it useful in everyday family use, while total range can stretch beyond 600 miles.

BYD Seal U DM-i (24-)
BYD Seal U DM-i

RRP From: £34,995
Pre Reg From: c. £29,000

Dimensions: 4775 × 1890 × 1670 mm
Boot: 425L

Key rivals: Audi Q6 E-Tron, Peugeot E-5008, Renault Rafale PHEV, Tesla Model Y

The Seal U DM-i is one of BYD's more established UK plug-in hybrids, offering a spacious five-seat cabin and a comfortable, efficiency-focused driving experience. It now sits alongside the newer Sealion 5 rather than replacing it, giving BYD two closely priced family SUVs with subtly different priorities.

BYD Sealion 7 (25-)
BYD Sealion 7

RRP From: £47,025
Pre Reg From: c. £38,000
Used Price From: c. £29,500

Powertrains: EV
Dimensions: 4830 × 1925 × 1620 mm
Boot: 520L

Key rivals: DS No8, Kia EV6, Lexus RZ, Mazda 6e, Polestar 4

The Sealion 7 sits towards the top of BYD's electric range, combining a spacious fastback-SUV body with powerful rear- or all-wheel-drive powertrains. The quickest versions deliver serious performance, while larger batteries and rapid charging make it far better suited to long-distance use than BYD's earlier electric models.

BYD Shark (26-)

RRP From: £47,290
Pre Reg From: c. £47,000
Used Price From: N/A

Powertrains: PHEV
Dimensions: 5457 × 1971 × 1925 mm
Boot: 1200L load bed

Key rivals: Ford Ranger PHEV, Isuzu D-Max, KGM Musso, Maxus eTerron 9, Toyota Hilux

The Shark is BYD’s first pickup and one of the most unusual new arrivals in the UK market, combining a full-size double-cab body with the brand’s plug-in-hybrid Super Hybrid system. It offers serious performance, useful towing ability and up to 55 miles of electric-only range, while the 1200-litre load bed and 3500kg gross vehicle weight give it the working credentials buyers expect from a proper pickup.
