Alexander Dennis Large Buses & Double-Deckers

Alexander Dennis Enviro400
The diesel-powered Enviro400 remains one of Britain's most successful double-deck buses, combining high passenger capacity with proven commercial-vehicle engineering. Available in three body lengths, it accommodates up to 85 seated passengers in its longest configuration, making it particularly suitable for busy bus routes, schools, events and private hire. Its 6.7-litre Cummins diesel engine is paired with an automatic transmission and Alexander Dennis SmartPack efficiency technology, reducing fuel consumption and emissions. Operators can choose conventional or City-style bodywork, alongside features such as high-backed seating, seatbelts, USB charging and enhanced interior finishes. Despite the growth of electric buses, the Enviro400 continues to attract new orders from British operators in 2026.

Alexander Dennis Enviro400EV
The next-generation Enviro400EV represents a substantial advance over Alexander Dennis's earlier electric double-deckers. Developed around a dedicated electric drivetrain and modern battery technology, it combines seating for up to 80 passengers with exceptionally low energy consumption. Its 472kWh battery provides a theoretical range of up to 385 miles under the UK Bus Cycle, although real-world operating distances will vary considerably. A powerful 410kW peak-output motor delivers smooth performance, while regenerative braking and an efficient heat-pump climate system help reduce energy consumption. A shorter London-specific version offers 62 seats, with an accessible centre-door entrance. Already operating with British transport companies, the Enviro400EV is one of the manufacturer's most important current models.

Alexander Dennis Enviro400XLB
The Enviro400XLB takes the familiar double-decker formula to a considerably larger scale, using a three-axle Volvo B8L chassis to provide exceptional passenger capacity. Earlier 13.4-metre examples accommodated up to 100 seated passengers, making them particularly useful for busy interurban routes, guided busways and airport services. The model has received renewed investment in 2026, with Lothian ordering 60 new buses featuring a shorter 12.8-metre body and improved accessible passenger accommodation. Their extended lower decks provide additional space for wheelchairs, pushchairs and priority seating. With robust Volvo mechanicals and a wide selection of interior equipment, the Enviro400XLB offers a compelling alternative to operating multiple smaller buses on heavily used routes.

Important Information
Prices, specifications, dimensions, seating capacities, weights, power outputs and equipment are based primarily on information published by vehicle manufacturers and their official UK representatives. Specifications can vary by body length, chassis, model year, interior layout and individual operator requirements.
Prices shown are UK prices where available and are intended as a guide. Where an official UK list price is unavailable, pricing is shown as POA. Prices can vary substantially according to contract size, optional equipment, accessibility requirements and operator-specific conversions.
Passenger seating capacity and total passenger capacity are different measurements. Some buses accommodate additional standing passengers, while wheelchair spaces, seating arrangements and accessibility equipment can affect total capacity. The Enviro400XLB's 100-seat specification relates to the established 13.4-metre version; final seating details for the newly ordered 12.8-metre version may differ.
Licence categories shown are a general guide only. Individual driving entitlement can vary according to passenger-seat count, vehicle weight, vehicle length, licence issue date, grandfather rights, Section 19 operation and other exemptions. Passenger-seat counts used for licence purposes exclude the driver. Always check the vehicle's plated specification and your own driving-licence entitlement before driving.
Electric driving ranges are manufacturer claims based on stated testing conditions. The Enviro400EV's maximum theoretical range is calculated using the UK Bus Cycle and should not be directly compared with passenger-car WLTP figures. Real-world range will vary according to passenger load, operating speed, temperature, heating, route characteristics and battery condition.
Specifications are checked against the latest information reasonably available to The New Yardstick at the time of publication or update. Manufacturers may alter specifications, pricing or availability without notice. Figures for older Enviro400XLB specifications should not be assumed to apply unchanged to newly ordered vehicles.
